Your Period After Birth

Postpartum Period

One of the perks of pregnancy is nine or so months of skipping your monthly flow, but after the baby is born, it’s only a matter of time before you’re back in your period pads.

So, when will my periods start again after pregnancy?

Everyone is different; therefore, it is difficult to be exact about when periods will start again after the birth of your little bundle of joy.

You could start your period as soon as 5 to 6 weeks after you give birth if you bottle feed your baby or combine bottle feeding with breastfeeding. However, if you fully breastfeed (including at night) and don’t bottle feed your baby at all, your periods may not start again until you stop night-time nursing. Your periods may also resume when you begin to give your baby solid foods, formula or weaning with other milk.

Women who breastfeed exclusively and frequently do so, in most cases, ovulate and if you’re not ovulating, you’re probably not having a period.

What will my first period after labour be like?

There is no typical pattern for the first period after having a baby, some woman may have heavy, painful periods while other may enjoy a light easy period. Your first period may be different from how your period was prior to being pregnant. These are the changes that may happen to your period:

·         Irregular periods – this can happen especially if it returns while you’re breastfeeding

·         Cramping – this can be worse or better than before you were pregnant

·         Heavier periods

·         Small blood clots in your periods

If you experience blood clots in your period, or your period is much heavier than before, please speak to your midwife or visit your GP.

When would I be able to get pregnant again?

You may be able to get pregnant as little as 3 weeks after the birth of your baby, even if your periods haven’t started again yet.

Whenever mother nature decides to return, ensure to stay protected, leak free and comfortable with our range of certified organic period pads, in a variety of flows to suit your needs.
